Using Liquid Fungi Shiitake Mushroom Plugs

Growing mushrooms—whether it’s shiitake or any other type—using the log method requires dedication and patience. If you use plugs, you must drill two-inch-deep holes in the log. Then, insert the plug, hammer it down, and seal it with wax.

How Many Plugs Do You Need?

100-count plug spawn packs usually are enough for 1-2 logs, 500 ct. packs can reliably do 5-10 logs, 1000 ct. packs will do 10-20 logs. Actual numbers will vary based on log size and hole spacing.

Selecting the Right Wood

An oak tree is the ideal wood log for shiitake mushroom plugs. However, you may use maple, birch, poplar, or aspen as alternatives. These logs can also accommodate the growth of shiitake mushrooms.

Method & Colonization

Growing shiitake mushrooms works best with the log method. It will take at least 12 months of colonization before mushroom production, and shiitake tends to fruit throughout the summer to fall growing seasons and after rainfalls.

Getting Started with Plug Spawn

Logs should be inoculated within a week or two of cutting. This allows the cells in the tree to die but is not long enough for the log to dry out or for other competitor fungi to become established. You should not use logs that were cut last year or logs with damaged bark. A month would be about the longest reasonable period between cutting and inoculating.

For plug spawn, you’ll need some different tools to get started:

  • A power drill
  • A 5/16” (8mm) bit to make holes in the log
  • A hammer to drive the plugs into the holes
  • A wax dauber
  • Wax to seal the holes
