What to Expect on the Trail

The section between Moccasin Springs and Cripple Turkey Road delivers a classic Ozark forest hike—quiet, remote, and scenic. In late fall, the trail is blanketed in leaves, which can make it challenging to follow in places. A dependable trail app is helpful for staying on course.

Although there are two water crossings, both were dry during our mid-November hike. Seasonal changes may affect flow, so be prepared for shallow crossings during wetter months.

One of the standout features of this trail is its solitude. We didn’t encounter a single hiker along the entire route, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy peaceful woodland walking without the crowds often found on more popular segments.

Seasonal Notes

By mid-November, leaf drop can obscure the trail and soften the contours of the terrain. While the path is mostly intuitive, some stretches may require a more careful eye, especially where the tread is faint or interrupted by rocky patches. Cooler weather also keeps the forest crisp and quiet, offering excellent conditions for a relaxed hike.

Spring and early summer bring greener views and potential water flow at the creek crossings. Fall offers brilliant colors early in the season before the leaves come down, while winter provides more open views through the trees.

Tips for a Smooth Hike

  • Navigation can be tricky when the leaf litter is thick—download an offline map before heading out.
  • This is a point-to-point section, so arrange transportation if you don’t plan to retrace your steps.
  • Expect complete solitude, especially during the off-season.
  • After rain, water crossings may be active, so proper footwear is recommended.
