Essential Oil Wood Cleaner and Polish

This DIY Wood Cleaner & Polish is made from all-natural ingredients. Cleans your wood furniture and polishes using a natural vegetable-based carrier oil and leaves a fresh clean scent from sweet orange essential oil.

I created this video for another blog but since it uses essential oils I believe it might be useful to readers of this site as well. The essential oils used in this wood cleaner recipe are mostly for fragrance, but they will give your home a fresh clean scent when used to clean your wood.

Essential Oil Wood Cleaner and Polish Recipe

This essential oil wood cleaner and polish is easy for the do-it-yourselfer to make in a couple of minutes.

  1. 1 Cup Distilled Water
  2. 1/4 Cup Distilled White Vinegar
  3. 2 Tbsp Carrier Oil (Grapeseed, Sweet Almond, Fractionated Coconut, etc.)
  4. 10 drops essential oil (Sweet Orange, Lemon, Cypress, Cedarwood, etc.) Buy essential oils here.

Combine all ingredients and place into a dark glass spray bottle. The dark glass prevents sunlight from destroying the essential oils in the mix. Shake the bottle well before each use to remix the ingredients. You need to do this because essential oils don’t mix well with water. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe and polish the wood. You can spray directly onto the wood, or spray on the microfiber cloth and wipe onto the wood. I recommend using microfiber cloths because they clean streak free and are amazing for cleaning glass and hard surfaces. Remember to wash them in cold water and dry on the “Air” setting in the dryer to maintain them.

When you want to live green and avoid using chemical cleaners this essential oil wood cleaner and polish is a great way to start. It’s easy to make in just a few minutes and will last a long time if you use a dark spray bottle and keep it in a storage area away from light.

How It Works

White vinegar, also known as acetic acid, is a great cleaning agent. When you dilute white vinegar with water you get a very mildly acidic cleaning solution. This solution works great for cleaning all your wood such as furniture, cabinets, and floors. However, you should not use vinegar for cleaning granite and other natural stone around the house. The vinegar can remove the sealer on granite and other stone countertops. Use my natural granite cleaner instead. You can find the link here.

Adding an oil such as the grape seed oil used in the video helps to polish and feed the wood. You can use other natural oils you have around the house such as olive oil, or another carrier oil such as sweet almond oil.

The essential oils used in this mixture are used more as a fragrance to give your home a naturally fresh and clean scent. Using citrus oils like sweet orange or another citrus scented oil will give your home that naturally clean smell. You may also want to try some of the wood essential oils too, such as cypress or cedarwood.
