I created this video for another site I manage, and we thought it might be useful to our readers here as well. This video shows you how to make a DIY peppermint foaming carpet cleaner. You can substitute other essential oils if peppermint doesn’t suit you.
This foaming carpet cleaner is very easy to make. It only requires three ingredients. You’ll also need an amber glass spray bottle to mix and store your carpet cleaner.
- 3 cups distilled water
- 1 cup Castile Soap (Purchase it here)
- 10 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (Purchase it here)
You can adjust the recipe to fit whatever size spray bottle you have on hand. Just mix at a 3:1 ratio.
You will want to add the Castile soap to the bottle first. Next, add the Peppermint essential oil. The Castile soap will act as an emulsifying agent to help the essential oil mix with the water.
Next, add the 3 cups of water and shake gently to mix everything together well. Just shake it before each use.
As I show you in the video I have cats and on occasion cats will throw up a hairball, even with hairball formula food.
Using this DIY peppermint carpet cleaner I sprayed it on the stain and used a microfiber cloth to rub the cleaner into the stain. I let it sit for about 5 minutes, and then I used another microfiber cloth to scrub the carpet and dry it at the same time.
After application, the video shows the stain is gone, and it looks like it was never even there. The peppermint essential oil has an amazing smell also, which will linger in the carpet.
Peppermint essential oil is a good oil to use for cleaning, as are the citrus oils. You could substitute your favorite citrus oil in this recipe as well.
I would recommend if you want to use sweet orange oil that you mix it up and try it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet first though. Sweet orange essential oil is an orange color and although it shouldn’t stain due to the dilution, it would still be a good idea to test first before using on light carpets.
After using this for other stains I have found it works even better than I initially gave it credit for. I decided to really put it to the test on a stain that had been in my carpet for a while. I had spilled a little grease while bringing in some food off the grill.
I had used several commercial cleaners on this stain, but you could still see it. I decided to give this carpet cleaner a go thinking it can’t possibly do any worse, right?
It completely removed the stain, and you cannot even see any remains where the stain used to be.
