History of East Calico Rock

One of the signs tells the story of Peppersauce Alley, a grouping of “shanty taverns” that lined the banks of Calico Creek. It was a rough place where drinks were served of the “peppersauce”, or homebrew whiskey, that was available at the time. The sign proclaims that it wasn’t a place for “gentle folk” to venture into. The taverns were the places that troublemakers and thieves gathered. There were violent acts, including occasional gunfire and knife fights, which meant the jail was probably used frequently. The jail is still standing, and doesn’t look like a pleasant place to have been back at the turn of the 20th century.
There have also been reported sightings of orbs or other paranormal phenomena in the area. If you are interested in the paranormal, this is the place for you. The old funeral home might be of particular interest (pictured below). However, please keep in mind that this is a historic area. Respect the buildings and the property owners. Look but don’t take anything.
